To mark the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album, Placebo announce the release of “Placebo RE:CREATED” — a powerful new reworking of the record that first introduced the band to a wider audience in 1996. The album will be released on June 19, 2026 via Elevator Lady Ltd in partnership with AWAL.
Emerging at the height of the britpop era, Placebo stood in stark contrast to the dominant cultural landscape of the time. While much of British guitar music focused on lad culture and national identity, Placebo’s debut offered something far more provocative and confrontational. Addressing themes of sexuality, androgyny, addiction, and alienation with rare honesty, the band quickly became one of the most distinctive voices of their generation.
Thirty years later, with “Placebo RE:CREATED”, the band revisits this landmark release with a fresh perspective. The album features reworked and expanded versions of all ten original tracks, alongside two bonus songs from the original release. It captures how these songs have evolved over decades of live performance while preserving the raw essence that defined them. Featuring breakthrough singles like “Nancy Boy” and “36 Degrees”, the new recordings amplify the intensity and character of the originals while reflecting the band’s growth and experience.
Placebo comment on the new release:
“We think of this record as a director’s cut. We haven’t recreated it from scratch. We went back to the original master tapes and brought 30 years of playing these songs live back into the record.
This project was about finally finishing the record, dragging it into the 21st century sonically, while preserving the integrity and the spirit of the original. It’s not about improving it — there’s nothing wrong with it — it’s about completing it.
When we made the first album, we didn’t yet have the experience or the studio knowledge to fully translate what was in our heads. Over the years, the songs took on a life of their own on stage; they grew, they developed, they kind of completed themselves.
It’s a celebration of where we began, and a meeting point between who we were then and who we are now. It’s a way of honouring that innocence, while letting the songs exist with the scale, confidence, and energy of the band we’ve become.”
When Placebo first emerged in 1996, their aesthetic and lyrical content challenged the established norms of British rock culture. Their deliberately ambiguous, striking, and provocative visual identity questioned traditional ideas of gender and masculinity at a time when such conversations were rarely part of the mainstream. In doing so, Placebo created space for a different kind of alternative voice — one that deeply resonated with audiences outside the cultural mainstream and continues to influence artists to this day.
Today, conversations around identity, gender expression, and individuality are more visible — and often more contested — than ever. In this context, the origins of Placebo’s debut album feel strikingly relevant once again. “Placebo RE:CREATED” not only pays tribute to the legacy of the original record but also highlights its enduring cultural significance, reaffirming just how ahead of its time it truly was.
The album was recreated by Brian Molko and Rob Kirwan using the original master tapes, with mixing by Adam Noble. The result is a body of work that retains the immediacy and rebellious spirit of the original while pushing its sound into new territory — reflecting both the band’s long relationship with these songs and their continued artistic evolution.

Later this year, Placebo will embark on an extensive UK and European tour to celebrate this milestone. The band will perform songs from their first two albums, “Placebo” and “Without You I’m Nothing” — some of which haven’t been played live in over 20 years. The tour kicks off in Portugal before heading across Europe, including a stop in Łódź on November 18, and will conclude in the UK. In total, the band will play 36 shows for hundreds of thousands of fans.
Placebo will also join their longtime friends Garbage on stage at the legendary Royal Albert Hall, at the invitation of The Cure’s Robert Smith, as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust concert series — one of the UK’s most respected charity music events supporting young people affected by cancer.
